Thousand gather in the Vatican's St Peter's Square in the Vatican on Sunday, May 18, to witness Pope Leo XIV's formal inauguration.
In a landmark moment, Pope Nate Robert Prevost, formerly Cardinal Nate Robert Prevost, is to officially assume the papacy, and become the first American to lead the 1.4 billion-strong Roman Catholic Church.
The traditional Mass of Inauguration, a solemn ceremony signals the formal start of his pontificate.
It features the bestowal of the pallium, a finely woven white wool band with crosses symbolising the pope’s universal jurisdiction, and the presentation of the Fisherman’s Ring, a traditional sign of his papal authority.
