Pope Leo XIV's formal inauguration Mass takes place in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City, on Sunday, May 18.
The new pope, formerly known as Cardinal Nate Robert Prevost, is the first American to ascend to the papacy, following his election last week.
The ceremony, known as the Mass of Inauguration, marks the official start of his leadership of the Catholic Church, which includes 1.4 billion followers worldwide.
It features the bestowal of the pallium, a finely woven white wool band with crosses symbolising the pope’s universal jurisdiction, and the presentation of the Fisherman’s Ring, a traditional sign of his papal authority.
The new pope is set to hold his first general audience on May 21.
