India's Modi addresses nation on 80th Independence day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation from the historic Red Fort on Saturday, August 15, as India celebrates its 80th Independence Day.

This year's theme - 'Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047' - is about harnessing the power, energy and innovation of India's youth, and transforming the country into a 'full-developed' nation by 2047.

The celebrations also mark 150 years of Vande Mataram - the 19th century poem adopted as the national song of India in 1950.

The ceremony brings together thousands of guests, including young achievers, representatives from different parts of the country and other distinguished invitees.

India celebrates its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026. It marks 79 years of freedom from British rule, with the first Independence Day held on August 15, 1947.
