Spain has deployed a major police and military security operation in Ceuta following social-media calls for a new mass attempt by migrants to cross from Morocco on August 15.

Hundreds of additional police and Guardia Civil officers have been brought into the Spanish enclave, while military personnel have also been deployed. Security has been reinforced along the land border, coastline and surrounding areas, with maritime barriers, patrols and surveillance measures put in place.

The operation follows warnings that thousands of migrants could attempt to repeat the mass crossing of July 30, when around 72,000 people entered or attempted to enter Ceuta from Morocco.

Morocco has also mounted a major security operation on the other side of the border, deploying police and military units around Fnideq and strengthening physical barriers to prevent migrants from reaching the frontier.
