A funeral procession for Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is held in the holy city of Qom on Tuesday, July 7, as mourners gather to pay their final respects.
The procession follows three days of public farewell ceremonies in Tehran, held as part of a period of national mourning. The cortege will pass through Qom, home to Iran's most influential Shia seminaries and the spiritual heartland of the Islamic Republic, before a final farewell in Mashhad, where Khamenei will be buried on July 9.
Khamenei led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades after succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as Supreme Leader in 1989, overseeing a period marked by regional conflicts, international sanctions and heightened tensions with the West.
Khamenei was killed at his compound in Tehran during the opening wave of Israeli and US airstrikes in the operation dubbed 'Epic Fury'.
