Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is laid to rest in the holy city of Mashhad on Thursday, July 9, following days of mourning ceremonies across Iran and the region.
The burial comes just over five months after Khamenei was killed at his compound in Tehran during the opening wave of airstrikes in the Iran war, by the United States and Israel.
Khamenei led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades after becoming Supreme Leader in 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. His tenure was marked by regional tensions, international sanctions, and Iran's expanding influence across the Middle East.
His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, assumed the position of Supreme Leader.
