Mourners gather in Karbala on Wednesday, July 8, for a farewell ceremony honouring Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The ceremony comes just over five months after Khamenei was killed at his compound in Tehran during the opening wave of airstrikes in the Iran war, by the United States and Israel.
His body is scheduled to be taken to the holy city of Mashhad for burial on July 9.
Khamenei led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades after becoming Supreme Leader in 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. His tenure was marked by regional tensions, international sanctions, and Iran’s growing influence across the Middle East.
