Vote counting is underway at the Corferias data processing centre in Bogota on Sunday, May 31, where Colombia’s National Civil Registry is consolidating preliminary results from the country’s presidential election.
More than 41 million Colombians are eligible to vote in the election, which will determine the country’s next president. Electoral authorities say preliminary results are expected to be released throughout the evening.
Pre-election polls identified Ivan Cepeda Castro, representing the left-wing Pacto Historico coalition, and Abelardo de la Espriella, candidate for the conservative Defensores de la Patria movement, as among the leading contenders.
If no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the valid vote, a presidential runoff election will be held on June 21.
