Live from Lima as voters begin casting their ballots in Peru’s general elections on Sunday, April 12.
More than 25 million people are eligible to vote in a highly fragmented race featuring 35 presidential tickets, in a country where voting is mandatory for citizens aged 18 to 70.
A total of 208 officials will be elected, including the president, two vice presidents, 60 senators, 130 deputies, and 15 Andean parliamentarians, along with their alternates.
Among the leading contenders is Keiko Fujimori, the Fuerza Popular leader running for the presidency for the fourth time, alongside former Lima mayor Rafael Lopez Aliaga and Cesar Acuna of Alianza para el Progreso.
If no candidate secures more than 50% of the valid vote, the election will head to a runoff in June between the two leading contenders.
