A high-level event takes place at the United Nations headquarters, bringing together global leaders to address the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, in New York City on Tuesday, March 24.
The meeting focuses on reparations for the trafficking and enslavement of Africans, ahead of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, marked annually on March 25.
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama is set to deliver a keynote address, presenting a position backed by the African Union that recognises the transatlantic slave trade as a 'crime against humanity'.
The event includes discussions on historical accountability, racial injustice and pathways toward reparatory measures. It follows a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument in New York, honouring enslaved African people.
