Rally in Caracas marks anniversary of 1958 uprising, calls for Maduro’s release

Live from Caracas as demonstrators gather to mark the anniversary of the fall of the Marcos Perez Jimenez dictatorship in 1958 and to call for the release of Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, on Friday, January 23.

Crowds are expected to move through central Caracas as tensions remain high following the January 3 attack in which US forces captured Maduro and Flores.

The anniversary marks the 1958 uprising that ended Perez Jimenez’s rule and is widely seen as a turning point that paved the way for democratic government in Venezuela.

Protesters have also voiced support for Delcy Rodriguez who was sworn in as acting president.
