UN Security Council holds emergency meeting on Iran at US request

The UN Security Council holds an emergency meeting on Iran at the request of the United States in New York City on Thursday, January 15.

It comes as Donald Trump appeared to step back from the brink on Wednesday, saying he would 'watch and see' after being told there would be 'no executions'. Media reports suggested he was on the verge of launching strikes.

Iran has accused him of fuelling the violence and riots seen in recent weeks, with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei saying some were damaging property to 'please' Trump. Earlier this week, the US president told Iranian protesters that 'help is on the way' and called on them to 'take over your institutions'.
