Brazil’s Supreme Court in Brasilia resumes proceedings for a fifth day on Thursday, September 11, as the final stage of former president Jair Bolsonaro’s trial continues.
The five-judge panel is delivering votes sequentially. The final two justices, both appointed by President Lula da Silva, are expected to deliver their votes.
Bolsonaro, along with seven co-defendants, faces charges of attempting to stage a coup to remain in power following the 2022 presidential election, which they strongly deny.
In July, US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports and sanctioned the judge overseeing the trial, alleging a political ‘witch-hunt’ against Bolsonaro. Lula da Silva described it as 'unacceptable' interference.
If convicted, Bolsonaro could face more than 40 years in prison. Hearings are scheduled to run through September 12.
