The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) on Monday released footage of a Russian Su-35S flying in close proximity to a US F-16 over neutral waters in the Bering Sea near Alaska.
The video shows the moment when the F-16 was approaching the Russian Tu-95 aircraft before a Russian Su-35 whipped directly in front of the NORAD fighter jet, apparently taking it by surprise.
"On Sept 23, 2024, NORAD aircraft flew a safe and disciplined intercept of Russian Military Aircraft in the Alaska ADIZ. The conduct of one Russian Su-35 was unsafe, unprofessional, and endangered all," the agency said in a statement.
On 24 September, the press service of the Russian Defence Ministry reported that two Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers carried out a scheduled flight over the neutral waters of the Bering Sea. They were escorted by Su-35S and Su-30SM fighter jets.
"All flights are carried out in strict compliance with international rules on the use of airspace," the ministry said.
The MoD added that the flight lasted more than 11 hours.
