Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko emphasised his country’s commitment to nuclear security, during a meeting with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi in Minsk on Tuesday.

"Our plant is safe, and the experience that we have accumulated in Belarus will be useful for the organisation anywhere in the world," Lukashenko said. "You should know that we are committed to security and peace. We will do our utmost in order to ensure regional nuclear safety."
In response, Grossi praised the country for how it had implemented the nuclear programme.
"I think it was exemplary the way in which your country engaged with the agency working on a number of review missions on safety, different aspects, which I believe indicated a great commitment to transparency," he said.
The IAEA chief arrived on a working visit to Minsk on Tuesday. According to the agency’s press service, he is scheduled to hold a number of meetings and visit the nuclear facility.
Belarus has completed its first NPP near Ostrovets in the Grodno region, based on the Russian AES-2006 design. Construction began on May 31, 2012, with the first unit commissioned in November 2020 and the second unit entering commercial operation three years later.
