Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu held talks with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian as part of his visit to Tehran on Monday.

Footage shows Shoigu and Pezeshkian holding talks.

According to media reports, Pezeshkian emphasised that developing relations with Russia was a 'priority' for Iran and added that it was necessary to 'speed up the implementation' of joint agreements.

Earlier in the day, Shoigu met with Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian discussing the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, as well as issues on the bilateral agenda.

The press service of the Russian Security Council office reported that Shoigu also planned to hold talks with the armed forces General Staff Chief Mohammad Bagheri.

Iran's former health minister, reformist Masoud Pezeshkian, won the presidential election in a run-off vote on July 6, with more than 16 million votes.

It was held after former president Ebrahim Raisi and others were killed in a helicopter crash near the border with Azerbaijan. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed condolences over the death of Raisi and said he would keep 'the brightest memory’ of him.
