The advance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine into the territory of Russia's Kursk region has been stopped, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Valeri Gerasimov told Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with heads of law enforcement agencies in the Moscow region on Wednesday.
"At 5.30 am on August 6, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine up to one thousand men went on the offensive in order to seize a piece of the Sudzhansky district’s territory in the Kursk region. The enemy’s advance deep into the territory in the Kursk direction was stopped by the actions of the units of the State Border Covering Forces along with border guards and reinforcement units, airstrikes delivered by missile troops and artillery fire," Gerasimov claimed.
The Chief of the General Staff stressed that the military and the FSB border guards "continue to destroy the enemy in the areas immediately adjacent to the Russia-Ukraine border."
"The enemy lost 315 people, of whom at least 100 were killed and 215 wounded. 54 armoured vehicles, including seven tanks, were destroyed," he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, at a meeting with members of the government, Putin called the AFU attack on the Kursk region a 'large-scale provocation' and said that Kiev "is firing indiscriminately using various types of weapons, including missiles" at civilian facilities.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, on Tuesday morning the Armed Forces of Ukraine "launched an attack at the positions of the Russian State Border Covering Forces near Nikolayevo-Daryino and Oleshnya in the Kursk region". The department claimed that the Russian forces repelled the attacks and inflicted fire on the AFU in the border areas as well as on reserves in Ukraine’s Sumy region, destroying '16 Ukrainian armoured vehicles' during the fighting.
At the time of publication, at least 20 victims are known, 6 of whom are children. In addition, several deaths are reported.
The Russian Investigative Committee initiated a criminal investigation into the attack under several articles, including articles 205 ('Terrorism'), 105 ('Murder'), 222 ('Illegal bearing of firearms and ammunition'), and 317 ('Attempt on a law enforcement officer’s life').
The Ukrainian side has not commented on the Russian Defence Ministry’s claims at the time of publication. At the same time, the AFU General Staff reported on Wednesday morning that Ukrainian servicemen "continue to actively inflict tangible losses in manpower and equipment on Russian troops."
Meanwhile, European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano said that "EU continues fully support Ukraine’s legitimate right to defend itself against Russian aggression and its efforts to restore sovereignty and territorial integrity."
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
