Description

Rescuers were seen walking through a flooded area in Utiel on Wednesday and searching for survivors hours after storm DANA (isolated depression at high levels) caused dozens of deaths in the region.

Footage shows damaged vehicles and houses in the area as well as rescue crews working in the area.

Earlier on Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called on residents to take extreme precautions, especially those living in 'orange' warning areas: Andalusia, Valencia, Aragon, Castile, and Leon; and 'yellow' warning areas: Catalonia, Extremadura, Navarre, La Rioja, and Ceuta.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the bloc has activated the Copernicus satellite system to help coordinate rescue teams.

Meanwhile, European Council President Charles Michel said the EU 'is ready to provide its support' to Spain.

Madrid saw an amber weather alert early Wednesday as the eastern region of Valencia announced a 'red' warning.

According to weather reports, over a year's rain fell in just eight hours in Spain's Valencia, the region hit hardest by the storm.

Local authorities warned residents to stay home and said that the number of fatalities could rise. Roads and railway lines were also cut off as an estimated 155,000 households remain without power.
