Taiwan's military were seen preparing sandbags and assisting evacuations in Nanao Township on Tuesday as Super Typhoon Krathon was set to make landfall in the island in the major port city of Kaohsiung within the next days.

Footage shows soldiers preparing sandbags, assisting the elderly during evacuation and deploying armoured vehicles.

The Interior Ministry also announced that about 40,000 troops have been mobilised and more than 7,700 people have been evacuated in the region. Schools and office work were suspended due to inclement weather.

The typhoon was moving toward the island with maximum sustained winds of 198 kilometres per hour (123 miles per hour) and gusts of 245 km/h (152 mph), according to local authorities.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te stated during a government briefing that locals must be 'particularly vigilant' as the path of Krathon is "relatively rare, entering from the south and exiting from the east."

Typhoon Krathon lashed the Philippines' northern region on Monday, where it is known as 'Julien', causing severe flooding and led to evacuation of thousands.
