Thousands of people rallied in New York City on Monday to show solidarity with Gaza and call for an end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags, signs, and banners as they marched through the city. The protest, which drew at least 5,000 participants according to local media, saw confrontations with counter-protesters carrying Israeli and American flags. Some scuffles between opposing groups were reported, and a number of arrests were made.
One protester, Fatinie, expressed frustration with the U.S. political system, comparing it to a bird with two wings—Democrats and Republicans—both of which she believes have lost control. She criticised Vice President Kamala Harris for not heeding the concerns of both the Democratic Party and independent voters.
Fatinie suggested that the growth of a third party could better reflect diverse voter concerns, stating, "I hope the uncommitted movement grows and America shifts to a bigger party."
Fighting continues in Gaza for an eleventh month after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.
The IDF launched a subsequent campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions. Palestinian officials reported that at least 40,691 people had been killed and more than 94,060 injured at the time of publication.
