Omer Celik, the spokesperson for Turkey's governing Justice and Development (AK) Party, said that the 'process' for joining the BRICS group was 'in progress', speaking on Tuesday.
"Our president has already expressed various times that we want to become a member of BRICS. Our demand on this issue is clear," he said, responding to a report the previous day which suggested Ankara had applied 'months ago'.
"The process related to this is in progress, but there is no result on the issue. If there is a concrete development, we will share with you any evaluation, decision, etc. taken by BRICS on the issue. Our president clearly mentioned that Turkey wants to take part in these kind of platforms, including BRICS," he added.
On Monday, a media report claimed that Turkey had already formally applied for BRICS membership although this was not confirmed or denied by Ankara. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov was asked about the report, and said that it was 'indeed true' that Turkey 'is showing interest in joining BRICS'.
Turkey would become the first NATO member of the BRICS organisation. The BRICS group, which consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa expanded this year, with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates all invited to join.
