Description

Guards were seen controlling the entrance to the Columbia University campus in New York City as the security measures were strengthened on the first day of the semester to prevent the ongoing pro-Palestine demonstrations.

Footage filmed on Tuesday shows students waiting in line for security checks to enter the campus while some of the pro-Palestine demonstrators were seen picketing outside the building with placards condemning the university's administration.

"This is just a reminder for Columbia that the student movement is still well and alive," said one of the students. "Also, it's a reminder to the new students at Columbia, their institution that they pay tuition to is still investing in weapon manufactures, still investing in the Israeli apartheid…"

The picket was a response to the protest camp held at Columbia University in April, calling for the institution to "divest" from Israel in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

"The students are trying to voice their solidarity with the people of Palestine. We want the world to differentiate, to distinguish between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism and to understand the clarity and what the issue is here; we are altogether opposed to the occupation of a people, the illegitimate occupation of a people. It's not Jewish, it's not right, it not Godly - certainly not," said another demonstrators.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 40,861 people had been killed and more than 94,398 injured at the time of publication.
