Description

Climate activists from Futuro Vegetal on Tuesday sprayed red and black paint on the facade of footballer Lionel Messi's mansion on the Balearic island of Ibiza, Spain, to draw attention to the responsibility of wealthy people in the climate crisis according to a statement by the group.

Footage shows activists holding a banner saying 'Help the planet - eat the rich - abolish the police' on the premises of the villa, and spray-painting the walls in red and black.

According to media reports, Oxfam published a report in 2023 which alleged that the richest 1% of the world's population produced the same amount of polluting emissions in 2019 as the poorest two-thirds.

A video of the action was published on social media, and the activists claimed that Messi's villa was an 'illegal' structure that the footballer had purchased for 11 million euros.

It was not the first time Futuro Vegetal activists chose Ibiza for their protests. Last year, members of the group sprayed black paint on the cherry trees of Pacha nightclub and stormed luxury beach club Blue Marlin to protest against wealth and luxury according to media reports.
