The Vietnamese Coast Guard 8002 ship docked in Manila on Monday for a four-day joint exercise with the Filipino navy amid recent tensions in the South China Sea involving Beijing and the Philippines.
Footage shows the Vietnamese officers leaving the ship and interacting with the Filipino officers, who were seen waving Vietnam and the Philippines flags while the ship was docking.
"I believe that this is an excellent opportunity for the officers of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Vietnam Coast Guard to take part in the exchange of information and gain a deeper understanding of the diversities of their respective responsibilities, particularly in the area of maritime law enforcement," said Col. Huang Quoc Dat, the Head of the Vietnam Coast Guard delegation.
For Algier Ricafrente, the Commodore of the Philippines' Coast Guard, the exercises are intended to focus on maritime safety as well as to enhance Manila’s cooperation not only with Vietnam but also with other ASEAN Coast Guard and law enforcement agencies.
"Our program is not only with Vietnam, and we’d like to show our ASEAN counterpart that we are ready to cooperate with them as part of the capability buildup and the enhancement of cooperation and strategic partnership," he stated.
Vietnam’s CSB 8002 ship will reportedly conduct the manoeuvres with a Filipino coast guard ship near Manila Bay on Friday.
