Thousands of left-wing supporters marched on the streets of Paris on Saturday to protest President Emmanuel Macron's appointment of conservative Michel Barnier as France's next prime minister.

Footage shows Insoumise France politicians, including the party's leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, marching with protesters. Demonstrators can be seen waving the left-wing party's flags, meanwhile, others can be seen waving Palestinian flags and holding up signs reading 'Democracy annulled, Macron dismissed', 'The future belongs to the revolutionaries' and 'Stop the macron coup!'

"We are fed up with Macron and his whims! We all mobilised to vote for the NFP - New Popular Front for very good reasons. We chose the ballot box route because we were always led to believe that it was the best way to express our demands, we voted and we were not heard," one protester said.

"If we do not react today, tomorrow France will wake up in the hands of a dictatorship," another added. "The nationalists are strong in Europe, what is happening in the world cannot leave us indifferent. Just think of Gaza, Ukraine and the impoverishment of more and more people in France."

Barnier was named PM by Macron after July's elections left no party in overall control of the National Assembly. The centre-right politician's appointment triggered anger from the left, with one of the New Popular Front (NFP) alliance's leaders, Jean-Luc Melenchon, claiming the election had been 'stolen' from the French.

The NFP came first in July's snap elections, although did not win a majority, and Macron refused to approve the group's choice of PM, Lucie Castets, saying she could not win a vote of confidence.

According to media reports, Barnier will potentially need support from Macron's faction and the right-wing National Rally group to stay in power.
