Protesters were seen looting Ganabhaban, the official residence of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in Dhaka on Tuesday as thousands gathered outside the building following the PM's resignation.
Footage shows demonstrators pushing their way through vast crowds with pieces of furniture and other items, including a silver trophy and a ceiling fan. Others are seen burning photographs of Hasina and throwing her looted possessions on a fire.
Hasina announced her resignation on Monday before fleeing to India by helicopter. Later, Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of parliament and the formation of a national government.
It follows weeks of escalating violence across the country, with over 200 deaths reported amid police crackdowns on anti-government protests.
The protests were initially over a quota system reserving 30 per cent of government jobs for families of veterans of Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.
Hasina served as prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and then from January 2009 to August 2024.
