Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was seen welcoming Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to the Presidential Complex in Ankara on Wednesday as the two leaders were set to hold bilateral talks and renew diplomatic relations.
This marks the first official visit to Turkey by an Egyptian president in 12 years.
"Turkey-Egypt relations will be reviewed in all their aspects and possible joint steps in the coming period to further develop co-operation will be discussed," the Turkish presidency's communications office said in a statement on Tuesday.
Additionally, the office announced that al-Sisi and Erdogan will hold talks on ongoing regional and global issues, including the ongoing fighting in Gaza.
The visit comes after over a decade of strained relations between Turkey and Egypt, stemming from the fallout following the political upheaval in Egypt in 2013. Erdogan had criticised the ousting of then-President Mohamed Morsi, which led to a breakdown in diplomatic ties between the two nations.
However, recent efforts towards reconciliation have seen both countries engaging in talks. In 2022, ambassadors were reinstated, signalling a willingness to normalise relations and explore avenues for co-operation. More recently in February, Erdogan visited Cairo for bilateral talks to thaw relations between Turkey and Egypt.
