The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) unveiled the deployment of 250 nuclear-capable missile launchers to frontline military units in a ceremony led by Kim Jong Un.
Images published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) from an undisclosed location on Sunday show hundreds of launch-capable trucks parked in a square. Thousands of spectators are seen in attendance as Kim delivers a speech at the event.
According to KCNA, the launchers were manufactured in the DPRK munitions factories and are designed to fire 'tactical' ballistic missiles, a term which typically refers to systems capable of delivering lower-yield nuclear strikes.
Later, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson, Lee Sung-joon, said the missile launchers are likely intended for use in various ways, including to attack or threaten South Korea. He also mentioned that deploying near the border would indicate that the launchers have a lesser range than claimed.
The DPRK has been expanding its arsenal of mobile short-range weapons with the intent of overwhelming South Korea's missile defences while simultaneously developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the US mainland.
