Mourners held a vigil in tribute to the victims of the Georgia school shooting on Friday, where witnesses recalled how they experienced the tragedy.
"I had a bad feeling something was going on. And after I said that, I heard about six shots ring, and we didn't know what was going on. We thought it was people in the building who were working preschool, and then we heard another shot go off, and then we knew it wasn't, it wasn't any type of somebody working. We knew it was gun shots," a witness said.
"We closed the doors and we told everybody to get up against the wall, and next thing you know we hear another shot go off, and then another one. And then after that you hear the cops in the hallway running, some people get on the floor, they were trying to look for the suspect," he continued, adding that the students were eventually escorted out by police.
"On the way back down the hall, I could see them transporting the body. And it was one of our coaches. And it's just a sad day for a lot of our students. Sad days for a lot of our staff," the student conlcuded.
Footage shows students and locals participating in the vigil, during which a memorial service was held and attendees released balloons into the sky to commemorate the victims.
A demonstrator claimed that similar school shootings happened too often and 'all across America'.
"It's horrible, it's awful. Why would a 14 year old boy have access to guns and bring them to school? I believe that we as a society have failed America. America has failed its society," she stated.
The suspect, named Colt Gray, was apprehended after four people were killed and nine injured at the school. He was charged with four counts of felony murder for which he could a face a life in prison if convicted on one of them, a judge told the 14-year-old during a court appearance. The motive for the attack was unclear at the time of publication.
Authorities stated that an 'AR-platform' weapon, a high-velocity assault rifle, was used in the shooting. The father of the suspect, Colin Gray, has been arrested for 'knowingly allowing' his son to access the weapon, which was reportedly given to the student as a Christmas present, and stands accused of second-degree murder in relation to the deaths of the two students as well as four counts of involuntary manslaughter, among other charges.
The incident is the 45th school shooting this year in the US, which reportedly has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world. Data produced by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that more than 50 people are killed in the US every day using firearms.
