A series of trilateral meetings take place in Istanbul on Friday, May 16, ahead of the next round of peace talks in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The meetings will involve delegations from Turkey, the United States, and Ukraine, as well as separate discussions between Turkey, Russia, and Ukraine.
Over the weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed restarting direct negotiations without preconditions. In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted that a ceasefire must first be established.
US President Donald Trump publicly urged Zelensky to agree to the talks, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated his country’s willingness to mediate.
Dolmabahce Palace, located on the Bosphorus in Istanbul, also served as the setting for the 2022 peace talks at the outset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Both Medinsky and Fomin participated in those initial discussions as well.
