The funeral of former Uruguayan president José ‘Pepe’ Mujica takes place in Montevideo on Wednesday, May 14.
Mujica, a former revolutionary and leader of the country from 2010 to 2015, died at the age of 89 after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2024. He was known for his humble lifestyle and progressive policies while in office.
A former guerrilla fighter with the Tupamaros, Mujica endured nearly a decade of solitary confinement and torture during Uruguay’s military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s.
His death has sparked tributes from across the world, particularly from Latin American leaders.
