Thousands of Hindus gather in Tiruvannamalai on Monday, May 12, to take part in the Girivalam, a revered pilgrimage centred around the sacred Arunachala Hill.
The practice, observed predominantly by followers of Lord Shiva, involves a 14-kilometre barefoot walk around the base of the hill, believed to be his earthly embodiment in the form of Arunachaleswarar, the Fire (Agni) Lingam.
While Girivalam is performed throughout the year, it draws the largest crowds on full moons, as devotees seek spiritual purification, blessings, and the absorption of divine energy through the ritual.
