Live from the Vatican, mourners are gathering in St Peter’s Square on Thursday, April 24, to pay their final respects to Pope Francis, who lies in state at St Peter’s Basilica.
The Pontiff’s body was moved from the chapel of Casa Santa Marta to the basilica yesterday, where thousands are expected to file past in quiet tribute.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88, following a stroke and heart failure. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
Just days before his death, he appeared before crowds in St Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, waving from a vehicle in what would be his final public appearance. It marked the end of a long period of hospitalisation, during which he was treated for pneumonia.
