The pontiff died at his residence in Casa Santa Marta.
He made a brief appearance before crowds on Easter Sunday, following a prolonged battle with pneumonia this year.
The Argentine pontiff, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires in 1936, was the first Latin American and first Jesuit Pope.
