German citizens hold a candlelight vigil outside the Magdeburg Cathedral on Saturday, December 21.
It comes one day after a car-ramming attack at a Christmas Market which left five people dead, including a nine-year-old child, and 205 others injured.
The suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia who worked at a psychiatric clinic in Bernburg, was taken into police custody at the scene.
Saxony-Anhalt’s Interior Ministry has ordered all flags over government buildings to be flown at half-mast until Monday.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will participate in the memorial service held in the Cathedral at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT).
