It came as the US warned that Tehran was preparing a ballistic missile strike 'imminently'.

At the weekend, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed to avenge the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, killed in an Israeli strike on Friday.

Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was also killed in an attack on Tehran in July, which Iran blamed on Israel - although the country did not confirm or deny it.

In April, Iran also targeted Israel with a missile attack following the Israeli bombing of Tehran's Embassy in Damascus.
