Locals and tourists gather to catch a glimpse of the whales along the coast of Puerto Madryn on Thursday, July 18.

The annual event sees the whales approach the warmer coastal waters to give birth and nurse their calves. The highlight is the southern right whale, which can measure up to 18 metres in length and weigh up to 80 tons.

Prime whale-watching season in Puerto Madryn runs from May to December.
