Mexico marks 216 years of independence uprising with civic-military parade

Mexico marks the 216th anniversary of the start of its independence movement with a traditional civic-military parade in Mexico City on Wednesday, September 16, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The parade begins at the Zocalo and features members of Mexico's Army, Air Force, Navy and National Guard, along with military vehicles, aircraft and other contingents.

The event follows the annual 'El Grito' ceremony on the eve of Independence Day, when the president commemorates the 'Cry of Dolores', issued by Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810, which launched Mexico's struggle for independence.

Mexico's independence from Spain was ultimately achieved in 1821, following more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule.
