Thousands of mourners gather at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran on Wednesday, July 4, for a public farewell ceremony honouring Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The ceremony marks the start of three days of national mourning. His body is scheduled to be taken to the holy city of Mashhad for burial on July 9.
Khamenei led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades. He became Supreme Leader in 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and oversaw a period marked by regional tensions and international sanctions.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in his compound in Tehran during the first barrage of airstrikes launched on Saturday by Israel and the US, dubbed Operation 'Epic Fury'.
