The reigning world champions opened their title defence with a 3-0 victory over Algeria, and captain Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick in his 200th international appearance. Austria also began the tournament with a win, defeating Jordan 3-1 in their opening match.

A victory would secure a place in the Round of 32 for either side. It is the first World Cup to feature the newly expanded knockout stage, with 48 teams competing in the groups.
