Muslims gather at Mount Arafat near Mecca on Tuesday, May 26, to observe the Day of Arafah, the most significant day of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Observed on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah marks the spiritual climax of Hajj. Pilgrims spend the day in prayer, reflection and supplication, seeking forgiveness and drawing closer to God.
The observance commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s final sermon, delivered at Mount Arafat more than 1,400 years ago. The Day of Arafah precedes Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, which honours Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.
