The UN Security Council meets for emergency session in New York City on Tuesday, March 31, after three UN peacekeepers were confirmed killed in two incidents in southern Lebanon on Sunday and Monday.
The United Nations said one peacekeeper was killed by a 'projectile' on Sunday, and two others in an explosion on Monday. All three victims were Indonesian members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed along the Israel–Lebanon border to monitor hostilities.
The UN condemned the attacks and launched an investigation, saying the origin of the explosions was unclear.
The incidents occurred as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensified following the Iran war. Israel expanded ground operations in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese authorities say more than 1,200 people have been killed and over 1.2 million displaced.
