Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and a period dedicated to fasting, worship and community. It starts with prayers on the first night of the sighting of the crescent moon, as verses from the Quran are recited behind the imam.
Israeli authorities are set to restrict access to Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan, with lower attendance anticipated. Checkpoint controls tightened after October 7 2023, continue to limit entry to Jerusalem for West Bank residents.
