Student protest in Belgrade calls for snap election

Belgrade University students rally in the Serbian capital on Tuesday, January 27, calling on the government to hold an early parliamentary election.

For over a year, students across Serbia have led mass demonstrations against what they describe as widespread corruption under the rule of right-wing nationalist President Aleksandar Vucic.

Demonstrators argue that only a new vote can restore trust in the country's political institutions and have launched nationwide campaigns to broaden public support.

President Vucic has ruled out holding a snap election ahead of the regular schedule, though he has suggested a vote could still take place later this year.

Last month, student organisers said they had collected around 400,000 signatures in support of their demand for an early election.
