Live from Buenos Aires, the first full moon of the year rises over Puerto Madero, lighting the waterfront skyline, on Saturday, January 3.
Often referred to as the 'Wolf Moon', the January full moon takes its name from Native American and early European traditions, linked to mid-winter periods when wolves were thought to howl more frequently during the coldest weeks of the year.
This year’s Wolf Moon appears larger and brighter than usual as it coincides with a supermoon, a phenomenon that occurs when the Moon is close to perigee, its nearest point to Earth.
The lunar display also overlaps with the annual Quadrantid meteor shower, an early-January event known for producing fast, bright meteors. While the shower is typically visible to the naked eye under dark skies, the strong moonlight is expected to reduce the number of meteors visible from the ground.
