Thousands gather in Vatican City on Thursday, December 25, as Pope Leo XIV shares his first Christmas Day message and gives the 'Urbi et Orbi' ('to the city and the world') blessing from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica.

This blessing, delivered only on Christmas, Easter and special occasions, is expected to include an appeal for global peace and solidarity. The event draws worshippers and pilgrims from across the globe.

Leo XIV, the first US pontiff but with ties to Latin America, particularly Peru, through his earlier work, was elected in May following the death of Pope Francis.
