Brazil’s Supreme Court in Brasília resumes as the final stage of former president Jair Bolsonaro’s trial continues on Tuesday, September 2. Hearings are scheduled until September 12.
Bolsonaro, along with seven co-defendants, faces charges of attempting to stage a coup to remain in power following the 2022 presidential election.
The 70-year-old former leader has been under house arrest since early August for allegedly breaching a social media ban. He strongly denies all charges against him.
In July, US president Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports and sanctioned the judge overseeing the trial, alleging a political ‘witch-hunt’ against Bolsonaro. President Lula da Silva described it as 'unacceptable' interference.
If convicted, Bolsonaro could face more than 40 years in prison.
