The 'Scarlet Sails' holiday marking the end of the school year and the beginning of summer takes place in St Petersburg on Saturday, June 28.
It includes a concert which culminates with a ship - with scarlet sails - passing along the River Neva, as well as fireworks. The sailboat is the spectacular 'Russia' brig.
The holiday sees hundreds of thousands of spectators in the centre of St Petersburg. As the year coincides with the 80th anniversary of victory in WW2, the theme is the triumph of good over evil.
The event was first held in 1968, and resumed in 2005 after a 25-year break.
