Thousands of Orthodox Christians gather in the Serbian capital on Thursday, May 29, to celebrate Ascension Day with a traditional ceremonial procession.
The procession will be led by the spiritual head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Porfirije, who will carry the revered relics of Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and one of the most venerated saints in Serbia.
A large turnout is expected, including Orthodox bishops, priests, monks, and throngs of faithful worshippers. The event also draws participation from representatives of both national and city authorities, members of the Serbian Armed Forces and Gendarmerie, the police orchestra, folklore ensembles, students, and schoolchildren.
Ascension Day, observed 40 days after Easter, commemorates the Christian belief in Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven and is one of the most important feasts in the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
