Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that most countries were 'strengthening relations' with Moscow and turning away from the Western narrative, during his address to the 8th World Congress of Compatriots Living Abroad, in Moscow on Wednesday.
"The world's majority states don't go along with the West - they are strengthening relations with us in various formats and spheres," he said. "The peoples of the Global South and East understand that a sovereign, strong Russia is the most important factor in the formation of a fairer, multipolar world order."
According to Russian Federation Council Chair Valentina Matviyenko, citizens living in 'unfriendly states' continued to face 'serious pressure'.
"They even go so far that the authorities of the UK and the Baltic states openly declare the need to forcibly deport people of Russian origin," she added, suggesting that the country’s "enemies cannot defeat Russia either on the battlefield or in diplomacy."
None of those countries have reacted to the claims. According to media reports, Latvia in particular has introduced language exams for Russian citizens or risk having residency permits revoked. The UK has expelled a number of Russian diplomats.
The 8th World Congress of Compatriots Living Abroad takes place in Moscow on October 30-31, bringing together Russian politicians, representatives of non-governmental organisations, religious leaders, journalists and scientists.
